Nicole Y. Canegata

Born, raised and currently residing on the island of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, I live for travel, adventure, yoga, the arts, and the natural beauty that surrounds me.

I was inspired by my Dad’s photo obsession at a very young age; he compiled massive photo albums of every occasion, and was an avid picture taker. This led me to realize the importance of documenting everything and everyone through film and creating a visual story. My undergraduate studies in 2001 provided the opportunity to work as a print and commercial model and I became fascinated with the artistic and technical process behind the lens while in front of it. It wasn’t until I did Semester at Sea, a study abroad program where I lived on a ship for 100 days, circumnavigating the globe and visiting 10 different countries, that I realized that photography and traveling would become life-long passions of mine. I purchased my first digital SLR camera in 2007, and my life hasn’t been the same since that purchase.

I am a self-taught photographer who specializes in travel, portraiture, and fine art photography. My photojournalistic style reflects my passion for travel, nature and the human spirit. My solo debut show: The Traveling Lense in January 2011, featured a collection of travel photos depicting everyday life around the globe. My works have also appeared in three local exhibits: 100% for Haiti at Walsh Metal Works Gallery, A Seasonal Renewal at ReNuAtum Spa, and A Group Show at macheteMACHETE Gallery.
